This week we're 0 for 2. We tried entering Fizzy Pop in Thursday night in another non-winners of two other than/optional $25,000 claiming, but the race didn't fill. We were pretty surprised to be honest. We had 11 entrants last time out and seven were within two lengths of the lead. Granted, the winner graduated but I think at least the other six had to feel that they had a shot at this level. Even if you throw out the bottom three horses in that race, a field of six is certainly not altogether uncommon - especially this time of year at Canterbury. However, for whatever reason only four entered and the race was scratched from the card.
Next up was a Starter Allowance going a mile on the turf for horses that have started for a claiming tag of $10,000 or less. Both Bernell and I weren't too disappointed that the above race didn't fill because we thought this was a pretty nice spot: Fizzy is sharp, he likes a mile and he looks like he belongs with $20,000 claimers - generally speaking a nice recipe when going against horses that have been running for half that. Alas, when the entries came through my inbox today for Friday night there was no Starter Allowance on the card. My guess is that didn't fill as well.
Next up would be the nw2/optional claiming ($25K) level on July 31- same level as his last on the turf at a mile and a sixteenth. There is a $16,000 claiming race on the turf the weekend before, but I'm not sure if I want to drop him there just yet. He's been competitive at higher - a solid second in a straight non-winners of two $18,000 allowance - and I don't want to make it easy for someone who may want him. If he wasn't so sharp and showing that he was competitive at a higher class, by all means, lets drop him and notch a win. But I think there is more to be had before we tag him again. At least he's earned one more shot at it. And don't get me wrong, an extra 10 days of rest for our boy doesn't break my heart either. I'd rather have an extra week between races than too little time.
In the interim, Somerset Sam will try and break his maiden against some Minnesota-bred claimers on Thursday night and Larry Donlin will try and enter Somerset Wish in a substitute race on Saturday afternoon - so there will most definitely be some action this weekend, but Fizzy'll have to watch and wait.
