Golden Gate Fields - Race 8 or My Return to Cali Race

Here is the line-up for Race 8 at Golden Gate Fields for November 30, 2008. The race is significant (for me!) as it marks my return to the California racing scene as partner in Valid Port, a 3-year old colt. The race is a $10,000 claiming race going a mile over the main track (Tapeta) for a total purse of $12,500. In general, it looks like a group of horses that have had a hard time finding a race all got together and decided to run! A lot of droppers and turf horses in this small field of seven. We have a shot and that's all I can ever ask.

1. I Am Thor - Could conceivably drop the hammer here. Nothing overly impressive with his last three starts at Golden Gate, but Beyer's are among the best in this group.

2. Younique Cat - Almost always goes off at double digit odds, but managed to score for double the tag before the last layoff (at 11-1). Managed a second after the return down south.

3. R Fat Man - A familiar theme in this race, a horse dropping in from $20,000. Showed speed in last race (2nd after layoff) and may be poised to do more here.

4. Candlestick Park - An interesting horse that is in his fourth home since coming over from Arizona in June. Best Beyers of the group and solid recent form. Should be a factor here and a threat to take it all.

5. VALID PORT - A couple of flat races since the layoff, but, like many of the others, these were at twice the claiming level. Certainly eligible to improve and has been training great. He'll need a good one, but he's capable.

6. Ballet Way - Majority of starts have been on the turf, but has won one of three on the synthetic. Has been less than 2 lengths off the front in each of the last two and is also dropping from $20,000.

7. Sidepocket Cat - Returning to NoCal after a summer/fall sojourn down south where he hit the board twice but couldn't manage a win.
